Caesar Journal #9

Select 5 quotes from Act IV and V. Five quotes total! Complete the following for each quote:

1.  “I was not born to die on Brutus’ sword” Octavious says this to Brutus when they meet. This means that Octavious doesn’t want to be killed by Brutus. This shows that he is too noble to be killed.

2. “If we do lose this battle, then it is the very last time we will speak together.” Cassius says this to Brutus before they depart to fight. This means that Cassius wants to commit suicide if they loose the war because he doesn’t want to be taken prisoner. This shows that Cassius is almost cowardly and doesn’t want to be seen as a loser.

3.  “ Good words are better than bad blows, Octavious.” Brutus says this to Octavious when they meet before battle. He is telling him that words are more powerful that the sword and to watch out. This shows Brutus is cocky and thinks he will win.

4. “Forever, and forever, farewell, Cassius!
If we do meet again, why, we shall smile; If not, why then this parting was well made.” Brutus says this to Cassius when they depart to battle. He means that if they do not meet again they will be at rest, and they will be happy to have fought for what they believed in. This is important because this shows that they will not be prisoners of war.

5.” Thou shalt meet me at Philippi” The Ghost of Caesar visits Brutus at night and warns him of his near doom at Philippi. This is important because this shows that the Brutus is stressing about the war and is nervous that he will lose both e battle and his life.

1. “ What touches us ourself shall be last served” Caesar says this to Artemidorus, when he asks Caesar to read a note telling him to be weary. It is important because it is yet another warning to Caesar that is ignored that ultimately causes his death.

2. “Et tu, Bruté? –Then fall, Caesar.” Caesar says this to Brutus right as he stabs him. It is important because this shows that Caesar knows that Brutus betrayed him.

3. “But as he was ambitious, I slew him.” Brutus says this during his speech to tell the people that he killed Caesar because he was ambitious. This is important because he is trying to convince the people that he killed Caesar for good reasons so they wont get mad.

4. “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears. I come to bury Caesar, not praise him.” Antony says this during his speech. He tell the people of Rome that he doesn’t want to say how good Caesar was, he just wants to give him a proper funeral. He says this because he knows that the people are in favor of Brutus and don’t want to hear how great Caesar was.

5.”Tear him for his bad verses, tear him for his bad verses!” A plebian says this when he finds a poet named Cinna. He thinks that Cinna is a conspiritor just because of him name. It is important because they just kill everyone they think is a conspirator to get the word out that they are now against Brutus.

Dear Aunt Iris,

           

            Yesterday Brutus and his followers murdered our beloved Caesar. That very afternoon both Brutus and ark Antony gave funeral speeches about Caesar.  Brutus only talked of how what he id was the right thing and how we should not be upset at him, he said nothing of the man whose funeral we were at. While Antony spoke of all the great deeds Caesar has dine and that he wishes he could be with him. Come with me to join Mark Antony in a battle against the conspirators.

Mark Antony’s speech he talked of Caesar and all of his accomplishments. He made me realize again why I loved Caesar. His words also made me realize that the men who plotted and committed his murder should me gravely punished.

I believe that Mark Antony loves Caesar, and Rome more the Brutus and the other conspirators. Brutus killed him not for his ambition but for his superiority to him. Brutus believes that he should be ruler and not Caesar. Antony, on the other hand truly loved and would do anything for Caesar.

            Come with me and many other followers of Antony to attack, and hopefully, kill Brutus and his conspirators. Caesar needs to be avenged, and we must do that for him.

Persuasion

         Many times a brother looks up to his older sibling for guidance and support. I know my brother did and still does, but not as much as he used to. When we were very little I used to tell him to do silly things like run around screaming, “I like unicorns!” Well then it got worse I started telling him that the coins were worth much more than paper money. He thought a quarter was $25 and a $10 bill was worth 10 cents. So daily I would give him a dime in exchange for a 10-dollar bill. Sure I felt a little bad but how could I resist?

         Within the next few months I has made over 50 dollars in birthday, and Christmas money. Ty on the other hand had made about 50 cents. He boasted about his wealth and called me silly for just giving him money, I was feeling pretty good.

         Later that week my mom saw Ty running around with his coins and shaking them in my face, she asked “ Ty, what are you doing?” I walked away knowing this wasn’t going to be good. He replied, “Katya has been giving me money and all I had to do was give her green paper!” I could see from my hiding place that her face was turning cross. She said, “ That’s great Ty! Let me go talk to your sister.” She walked over to me and summoned me into my room. “ Katya Noemi Kaplow! Have you been taking Ty’s money?!” I said, “No, I just gave him smaller money in exchange for cash.” I smiled hoping to win her over with my adorable smile. It didn’t work.

         For the next week I was grounded, no Ty, no soccer, and no play dates. Ty had gotten his money back and he kept my 50 cents. That long week I learned that the power of persuasion was a great thing; but it needs to be used only in the right moments. This was no one of them.

         To this day I am still a very good persuader and usually win arguments and quarrels: but I know never to mess with Ty, because he doesn’t trust me anymore.

1.   “Which, hatched, would, as his kind, grow mischievous, And kill him in his shell.” Brutus says this to himself. He is saying that if Caesar ( if crowned king) will do bad for Rome so he must kill him before that happens.  This shows that Cassius’ praising worked and now Brutus is on his side.

2.   “No Sir, their hats are plucked about their ears, and half their faces buried in their cloaks.” Lucius says this to Brutus when he asks who is at the door. In covering their faces Cassuis and his men show that they are planning something bad.

3.   “Dear my good lord, make me acquainted with your cause of grief.” Portia says this to Brutus when she tells him he is being very secretive. She wants him to her what is bothering him. This is important because it shows that Brutus was seriously thinking about Cassius’ plan and was acting differently. It also shows that him and Portia have an open relationship.

4.   “They could not find a heart within the beast.” The servant says this to Caesar when he asks what the augurers found in the animal. The servant says there was not heart in the animal. This means that something bad is going to happen, a sign that Caesar is in great danger. Foreshadowing the events to come.

5.   “Caesar I will [Aside.] And so near will I be that your best friends shall with I had been further.” Trebonious says this on an aside to say that he is going to be close to Caesar to kill him. This is foreshadowing what is going to happen to Caesar.

1.   “For I believe they are portentous things unto the climate that they point upon.” Casca is talking to Cicero. Casca is telling Cicero that the weird events are huge and point to bigger things. It is important because it foreshadows what is going to happen.

2.   “When Caesar says “Do This”, it is performed.” Antony says this to Caesar. Caesar told Antony to touch his wife during the running race to help her have children. This shows that Antony is very obedient to Caesar and will do whatever he wants.

3.   “Beware the Ides of March” The soothsayer says this to Caesar. She is warning him to be careful because the Ides of March will bring danger. This is important because it foreshadows what will come.

4.   “Why there was a crown offered to him; and, being offered him, he put it by with the back of his hand, thus, the people fell a-shouting.” Casca said this to Brutus. He is explaining why there was a great tumult in the town. It is important because it shows Caesar refuses the crown and looks very strong and honorable.

5.   “For who so firm that cannot be seduced?” Cassius says this hen Brutus leaves. He explains how he is “seducing Brutus” so that he will crack and try to kill the king. This shows that he is conjuring a plan to kill the king and it involves Brutus.
